An animal adult, whether human or non-human, is one that has grown in all its potential. Within the human realm, adults refer to legal and social concepts. Legally mature means that a person is at the point of adulthood and is considered autonomous, self-sufficient as well as responsible. It is possible to refer to them as a "major". The age of 18 is the standard legal age for adulthood but this could differ depending on country and legal status, and also mental maturity.

The age of adulthood marks the point in human life when an individual has reached maturation in both physical and mental development. Adulthood is commonly thought of as beginning at age 20 or 21. Following middle age (starting about 40 years old) then comes the age of old age (around age 60). Adulthood can be divided into three phases: young adulthood (18-mid-30s), mid-30s-mid-60s, and the final stage of adulthood, mid-60s to death. At the beginning stages of adulthood (between 20 and 40) the bodies of our children have reached their full maturity although our weight and height might increase a bit. When we are young the physical capabilities of our bodies are at their peak such as muscular strength, reaction time sensors, as well as the functioning of our heart.
